The Big Announcement

The day that you thought we'd put off forever has finally arrived – it's time for the big announcement!

With our 10th anniversary fast approaching, we've decided it's time to finally breath new life into Dead Frontier. I'm not going to lie, we're both excited and terrified to make this announcement as we're taking the game in a totally new direction. It's an opportunity to fix all our past mistakes and implement a decade's worth of feedback from community - but as with any birth, we expect a bit of pain (and perhaps a little tearing) along the way.

Without further ado, we're proud to announce: DEAD FRONTIER 2  (deadfrontier2.com)

Roughly a year ago we came to the realisation that the only way to solve all our issues, bring the Dead Frontier franchise up to date, and once again grow our player base was to make a totally new game. And that's exactly what we've done.

I'm excited to say that Dead Frontier 2 is nearing completion, and will have the following features on launch:

  • An all in one game client, nothing runs in the browser
  • No more P2W. Cosmetic and utility upgrades only (and still free to play)
  • A brand new 4-player multiplayer system that focuses on player experience above all else. No more glitched zombies!
  • A lobby system, making it easy to to find and create game instances
  • A totally new skill system, giving the player a meaningful way to improve their character with every level up
  • Complex stats system giving almost endless build variety
  • A more immersive over-the-shoulder camera angle
  • Modern current gen graphics
  • Procedural game world that re-generates daily, giving a far more replayable experience
  • Realistic post-apocalyptic trading system with multiple markets, currencies and taxes
  • Notice board for missions
  • Upgradeable vehicles
  • Upgradeable weapons
  • Crafting system
  • True survival horror (not just mindless action!)
If you're at all interested in DF2, please visit deadfrontier2.com and sign up to the newsletter and/or follow the new Facebook/Twitter pages to be kept up to date with developments. I will of course be posting more information, screenshots, videos etc as time goes on, and we get closer to that April 2018 launch date.

FAQ

What will happen to Dead Frontier 1?

DF1 is not going anywhere, and I'll be keeping it alive pretty much forever. I'll keep on top of patching bugs and security issues and I may even throw in the odd update or two. I've even started chatting to various companies who can convert all the flash elements to HTML 5, thus giving DF1 some more longevity. I'm well aware that DF holds a special, nostalgic place in many of your hearts, and if anything else it would simply be a bad business decision to let it die. All your characters and items will be available for as long as you want them.

Can I reserve my DF1 account/clan name in DF2?

Yes. We all add a system in DF1 which will allow you to reserve your name before the launch. The same will go for clan names, with the owners reserving them.

Can I transfer my DF1 characters/items to DF2?

Unfortunately there is no way to transfer characters and items from DF1 to DF2, because their systems are very different. However we do understand that some of you might be upset that the characters you have invested time (or maybe money) into will be unable to follow you into the new game. With that in mind we have devised a system of rewards in DF2 for DF1 players.

We are currently preparing a bunch of unique cosmetic items to be given as rewards to players owning DF1 characters.  There will be a reward for having reached each of the following milestones in DF1:

- Being level 20 or higher
- Being level 50 or higher
- Being level 100 or higher
- Being level 200 or higher
- Being level 325
- Owning a UWC or WC
- Owning a UGAU or GAU
- Owning a VG
- Owning any of the dusk items
 - Owning an ultra boost
 - Owning ghost ammo

In addition, any RL money that anyone spends/has spent on DF1 from the start of 2017, to the full release of DF2 (probably April 2018)  EA release on August 31st 2018 will be transferable to the new game. The RL money value of what you get will be matched precisely.

For example, let's say you bought 10,000 credits this year, and bought a VG with them. Not only do you keep the VG in DF1, you will also get a unique cosmetic item in DF2 AND $240 worth of credits in DF2 as well.

Why only cosmetic rewards? Can't we have something powerful in DF2?

DF2 is a strictly non Pay2Win title. If we allowed powerful paid items from DF1 into DF2, it would immediately lose it's status, and people would call the game P2W again. Unfortunately cosmetic upgrades are really the only thing we can grant without tainting the new game's reputation.

I have multiple DF accounts, can I still transfer everything?

Yes! You can apply rewards from multiple DF1 accounts to a single DF2 account. All credits and cosmetic items will be pooled together. If you end up multiple copies of the same reward, that will allow you to have the item on more than one DF2 character at the same time.

I am banned in DF1, can I play in DF 2?

Yes, we are not carrying over old bans to DF2. It's a totally clean slate so you're more than welcome to play the new game.

What are the minimum specs for DF2?

At this stage we do not have exact specs as we would need to do in-depth testing of the final game to determine this. But I can say that the current build runs fine on my 4 year old budget laptop. My goal is to have the graphics scale down low enough that everyone will be able to enjoy it.

Can you explain how X works in DF2 in detail?

More details will be released about the new game over the next few weeks/months, as well as screenshots and videos. There is a lot to cover (too much for this post) and there is some stuff we'd like to keep as a surprise until we are near release. Don't worry though, I can promise it'll be good :-)

Why didn't you just update the existing Dead Frontier? Wouldn't that be quicker/easier?

In a nutshell no, it was actually far easier to start work on a new game. Below is a full explanation (be warned, it's long!)

Back in 2007 I started work on Dead Frontier. I was 20 and had been running my little indie games business for about 4 years already. Whilst I could program (and had been since I was a little kid), I was entirely self-taught, and to be honest my code was an utter mess. Dead Frontier was my first real attempt an doing anything online, and my knowledge of client/server tech was literally zero. I didn't even know the basics of PHP and MySQL at that time. Effectively I made the game by installing some free forum software, hacking it to store some extra variables about each user, and then slapped some flash elements in various places. Job done! It wasn't exactly the game I was dreaming of making, but it was a good enough approximation.

Whilst it kind of worked, it was incredibly inefficient, slow and buggy. Over time my programming skills improved massively and with some help & guidance from Niosop I managed to improve the online side of things. However I never fully managed to unentangle the game from the forum software it was based upon, and even now DF is still running with various bits of ancient code that I had copy/pasted from the internet. Over the years my updates have effectively been band-aids, temporarily keeping things running, but never actually fixing the core problems. Fixing the core problems, would pretty much mean a complete rewrite of the server-side, something that I've honestly been too scared to attempt, for fear of breaking things and upsetting players.

As anyone who works in the tech industry will know, applying updates to big, messy, badly designed code is an utter nightmare. Changing even small things can unexpectedly cause big problems. Generally I spend 20x more time fixing bugs and patching security holes than I do adding anything new to DF.

The 3D rewrite of the inner city was actually an improvement in this area. It was much better designed than the 2D client, and made updates and fixes a lot easier for a while. However even that improved style of coding is still far below the standard I would be writing today. Also, in an attempt to prevent certain types of cheating, I introduced more and more complex security systems to the 3D client over time. Whilst these system did (and still do) prevent a lot of cheating, they are incredibly hard to manage. For example the last big round of 3D client updates had lots of bugs which triggered the security systems, leading people to be banned unfairly. Further updates to the client are likely to have the same, or worse problems.

Ever since Google Chrome announced that it would be droppping NPAPI (the tech that allows the IC to run in the browser) I realized that the clock was ticking for Dead Frontier. My initial response to that was simply to create the standalone client. However this was only ever going to be a temporary solution. The system of clicking through links to startup the game each time you visit the city is incredibly messy. I also knew that Flash was dying, and it wouldn't be long before it too was blocked in most browsers.

I knew that the only real solution to this problem would be to have Dead Frontier running as a proper, all-in-one client. A single EXE that runs everything from the IC, the marketplace, the market, the forums; all in one app. However I must admit that when it came time to start on this project, I was immediately hit with a wave of depression. I was about to embark on a lot of hard work, but at the end of it all, after all the endless bugs and fixes, we'd still just have the same old Dead Frontier, built on top of the same buggy, badly designed server-side that we've always had. I forced myself to start work on it, but progress was incredibly slow and demoralizing.

As I worked on it, I began to realize there were a lot of other things I didn't like about Dead Frontier, beside the programming. Whilst I've always been proud of the game, I made some questionable design descisions. Such as:

1. Complicated and confusing food/drink/health/repair system
2. Dying in the outpost.
2. Weird/quirky controls (drag food to your mouth? lol)
3. Too much walking
4. Unbalanced high inflation economy
5. Too much grind
6. Short sighted stats system (lack of rewards for high levels)
7. Lack of build variety
8. Power creep
9. Too much Pay2Win

And probably a whole bunch more I'm forgetting.

I did plan to add more features to address these issues, but it felt like I was just sticking band-aids on again. It would be a huge upheavale to change the core design of the game enough to fix these problems. Some things (such as the economy) might be never actually be fixed, as it's hard to get rid of items/cash already in circulation. There is pretty no way to undo the "P2W" elements of DF1 at this stage either.

I was also very aware that DF looked incredibly dated, and our stats were showing that we quite literally were not attracting any new players anymore. New accounts are now just old players returning to see how things had (or had not) changed. So I began to think about improving the graphics, maybe launching an HD version of the game so that we could attract a new audience.

Then in late 2016, it suddenly hit me. Making all these changes was a huge and scary undertaking that would probably require several years to complete, and by that time I exepcted that the dwindling player base would already be gone. Not to mention we'd still be running on the same unstable roots. I realized that making a new game would actually be *a lot* easier than trying to drag the existing DF into the current gen of games.

For the first time in years, I actually felt excited about working on DF again. A new game would be a chance to get things "right", taking into account everything I've learned about game development over the last 10 years, whilst getting rid of the shackles of the old design and code.

I really feel like making DF2 was the right choice, and I'm confident most of you guys will agree once you've seen it :-)

  6. I have a doubt the credits will be transferable because I pay GM of half year and year and with the epic I was buying credits. Maybe my things buy them based on money I was collecting from the GM that if you pay, as Sabre if that is valid to be able to pass it apart from being 325 I think some favorable solution would have to have the time invested and the GM paid

    1. Any GM you bought since Jan 2017 will be credited to your DF2 account. So say 6 months would be $48 in DF2.

    ReplyDelete
  16. well. so, the main point is , if you have merched , you can easly kill your self...

    ReplyDelete
  17. So, df2 will not be a massive open world no more?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's won't be an open world style game IE with just one huge open map to wander around. I feel that having too much space makes a game far less scary as there is plent of room to run away.

The focus is on claustrophobic interior locations, to give it a much more horror vibe. There are outdoor locations too, but they are normally quite confined to keep the tension high.

      Delete
    2. There goes the neighborhood. Back when I used to play DF constantly, I felt that the open spaces was what gave the game charm and set it above all other zombie games out there. While this game was literally just announced and I fully intend to give this game the chance it is due seeing as to how it's supposed to be an upgrade from it's cool predecessor, I can't help but feel that this will be like 3D SAS zombie assault now. Just with realistic guns.

      Delete
    3. I haven't really played SAS zombie assault recently, but I believe it's just standing in an arena killing "waves" of zombies? If so that's nothing like DF2. It's more like an online version of Resident Evil 4 or maybe Evil Within in terms of locations and design.

      Delete
  18. Hey admin what about us merchant's? we never grind but just earn money. I hope there's something like a reward for having alot of $$$ somehow through the game because if it's level based all our efforts merching is just like nothing

  20. There will be new skills? Something like, faster reload speed,or faster movement speed etc etc.

    1. Yes there will be all of those and more. The current design has about 100 skills and quite likely we'll add even more.

  21. sooo, you hate p2w huh? yet you reward.... guess who?? lol, the p2w nubs. typicaly you completely ignore the long term players that have endured the downward spiral since 2010.
smh, at least give out a long service badge for 2d players, heck you could even give out a badge for anyone who bough gm in 2d... but no... you decide to to chase your p2w nubs... smh...
df2 will go the same way as, no point in saying you don't like something in the old game, only to introduce it to the new game

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry I don't understand what you mean. There will be no P2W purchases in DF2 of any kind. Remember in 2008 nobody cared about 'p2w', all f2p games back then allowed you to buy power. We just did what was acceptable at the time. However we have realized that was not the best way to go, and have changed our ways. I don't see how that is a negative thing.

      Delete
    2. AdminPWn I think what Anon is "trying" to say is: "you said in the announcement that you disliked p2w and the new game will try to separate itself from the model and instead give none boosting items in the premium store. But now for the new game you're going to reward people who spent money on the game for their patronage instead of rewarding those players who endured the game's downward spiral since 2010. You could atleast give 2D players a badge or something that thanks them for their playing the game. You could atleast make a badge for 2d gm buyers but nooooooo, you decide to go after your pay to win noobs. DF2 will go the same way as DF1, no point in saying you don't like something in the old game and then go and introduce said thing in the new game."

I think that about covers it.

    3. If there is no ptw, how will the game make money ?

    4. I guess via GM perchases

  22. So let me get this straight - for those of us who've bought our UWC/VG/anything else highly expensive before the start of 2017, there's not going to be anything we can do about it? I got my UWC late October 2016, but if there's only going to be cosmetic items for compensation it's extremely not worth it to continue on. Especially since I don't live in the US, so it was considerably more expensive.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you bought the UWC a long time ago then you will still get unique cosmetic rewards, you just won't get the additional credits to spend on other things.

      Delete
    2. Well as unique as they can be, I don't see how any amount of cosmetics can be worth almost $650, and I'm sure many others would agree. Good luck with your new game Admin, you might need it with this decision.

      Delete
    3. Ok I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling this way! A cosmetic item does not make up for cold hard cash spent! There needs to be some sort of reimbursement for people that bought uwc, vg more than a year and! How about depreciation??

      Delete
    4. Admin doesn't have to give you anything in df2 since its a newgame. You should be lucky you will get something that most others won't have. You chose to spend your money in df1 and bet you enjoyed what you spend there.

      Delete
  23. What if you bougt gm on different alts throughout the year - will all the cash spent on different accounts be transferred to 1 new DF2 account, and will the items bought for different accounts be counted for one new DF2 account....and their lvl achievements also?...much complication and processes to be thought about

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes you can apply multiple DF1 accounts to a single DF2 account.

      Delete
    2. If you have accounts registered on many different emails, will you have to change them all over to one email account to to do this ?
And what will the cost of playing DF2 be ? not many people will pay for cosmetic items which are of no practical use.

      Delete
  24. I'm honestly excited for this. Although I am incredibly sad to see the open world go, I am quite excited for the procedural generated areas. I hope we get cool new guns too and not just miniguns that are 100% more powerful than it's previous incarnation, in unlimited and limited ammo varieties for millions of in game money*insert laughing emoji here*. I hope melee will look cooler in this game and hopefully forging is a thing for all weapons. Creating weapon parts for custom weaponry etc.(I just say this because I hope to wield a custom made scythe in the game going by the name Fluffy Bunny and rek people in pvp with it :^D). I look forward to this and hope the zombies bosses are not like the ones released in the original game. AdminPwn you're a legend but constructive criticism here, I honestly felt that apart of what turned me off to the old game is that all the bosses at some point stopped being special. Every time a new boss was released, the summary of the boss could be boiled down to"it's fast and it hits hard, that's about it. Oh also it looks different". I hope in this new game the bosses have different mechanics and the challenge turns out to be more than just running around it in circles. :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. What about those of us who spent, I can't even think of a more fitting word here, a "fuckton" of money to get the UWC, VG and all the other LE stuff before 2017? We get nothing?

I'm trying very hard not to get angry here, I mean I get it, we get to keep all our stuff on df, but the game wont change, instead your making a new one were if you've reached a certain amount of milestones you get a snazzy hat? As thanks for supporting a game you no longer have any intention of keeping alive. Sure, you'll keep it running but it wont attract new players, you said yourself it's just old players making new accounts. So in the end df will die and those of us who spent money prior to 2017 on stuff just get a slap in the face and get to effectively play df in multiplayer but might as well be playing in single player because people will either move on to df2 or just quit altogether with the playerbase dwindling.

Well, guess I wont be renewing my gm during the halloween sale like I intended.

    1. You don't get nothing in that case, if you have all the criteria (UWC, VG, UB, dusk, high level etc) then you'll get up to 10 unique cosmetic items. I know it's not the same as what you bought, but it is a significant reward. Those items will be unique to DF1 players, and pretty rare, making you stand out quite a bit. I imagine those item will be very sort after in DF2, kind of like the Pumpkin Head was/is in DF1.

  28. I have a question. My account is in level 70 right now, I bought G.M. in february of this year but it was a 1 month G.M. that I bought. Right now I have almost 40m on my bank, my question is, what kind of reward will be given to me in that case?

And something that I readed on your post is something relevant about the cars, now the cars it could be used in the DF2? And how about in DF1, it will be the same? I hope yes, I mean, will be so cool, you know, beacuse by that way you can reduce for all of us the time on walking from a point to another one.

Just I have this couple questions, I hope you can answer me, this questions that have been surged on me meanwhile I readed your post.

Of course, have luck in this new game, I can't wait for his realease... SO EXCITED!! :D

  29. Glad you're excited :)

You will get the Level 20 & Level 50 reward, you will also get $8 worth of credit to spend in DF2 for any cosmetic items or utility items you might want.

I think it's unlikely that cars will be added to DF1 at any point now. As I mentioned in the post there is a lot that can go wrong with updating the old game, and I'd be wary of wasting too much time on anything for DF1 that might end up delaying DF2.

  32. hello neils, I am fascinated / intrigued by this new project that you are undertaking, I know that your intention is to have a game where we all have the same opportunities, but even so, certain doubts still arise. I've been a player that started almost the end of last year, and I've stayed f2p all this time, just dedicating myself to raising money to buy my things and level up, so I guess not only I but also the majority of the f2p with advanced accounts we will have the same, but, very similar doubts:

-credits / money: what will happen to the credits that we have saved? (I was collecting credits to buy a vg), the same question applies to the money we had in the bank.
-GM: While it is true that it is a new beginning, the question arises, we will see again the famous GM? and if so, would it bring benefits or would it only be a significant push, nothing that creates a gap between those who have GM and those who do not?
-DF1: The game although it is true that you claim to have it in line and operation, for how long will it be? The influx of players will have some impact on your decision to keep the servers running, bosses and competitions will continue to be given?

if you could clarify this doubts I would be very grateful, and I hope you will soon show more content of the update.

  50. So basically I Have a lot of end game gear. LE implants, Ultra boost, Ghost ammo, and a UWC. So basically all that means nothing in this new DF2?
I see that as a slap in the face to those who basically FUNDED this DF2 for Years and all that money and work levelling up is all worth not in this new DF2.
I Think most people will stick to old DF and hope u just update that and trash this DF2 when/if it becomes a failure like that turn based game you made. Doom Warrior was it? or did everyone forget that waste of time and money? (no offence Neil)

  51. Admin should only make sure that the df2 has good gameplay, since I've played quite a few games of this type in 3rd person in survival and not all excel, in addition to adding translations, since there is a lot of Hispanic community. like me for example. ReplyDelete
  62. well...since we can't transfer your account to DF2 and our effort the we put in this game all years long in DF1 gonna vanished when we moving to DF2

like CJ said alot of us not wanna throw it away and start over with doggy bag full of cosmetic item and grinding from lvl 1 again

so here's some solution about that

introducing "EXP capsule " that containing our exp from our DF1 account that can be obtaine from reserving our name in DF2
just like a boost drug that can be use once and of course it can't be transfer to anyone eles

and this item can be unlock when we reach the point of grinding on slow growing stage when we lvl up but notthing gonna change for awhile just like lvl 51~105 and lvl 220~325 in DF1

so we can experiencing the new game mechanics on the low level and after get use to it we can skip that boring part

what you guys think about this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I see where you're coming from, ALOT of people have spent endless hours grinding. BUT i think you should look at this as a completely new game. From the way Neil has marketed it, it seems to me that the fun part of this new game IS the grinding process, making a party with your friends and just having a good time in general. Kinda similar to the 2D DF days, I remember being in a room with all my friends and playing our first OA, one of the funnest times I had in DF. At the same time I think what you said is fair considering that some people have spent well over a month IRT in the game.

      Delete
    2. One thing I want to mention is that DF2 will have far less grinding. The current design has a max level of about 20, so I imagine a lot of you will be able to hit it fairly easily. My aim for DF2 is not to even have a "boring part" in the first place :)

      Delete
    3. so as far as i concerned all that we spend on the first game will turned to be nothing on the second game just a cosmetic thing GREAT NEIL GREAT

      Delete
    4. is that so?
then hopefully DF2 still being DF that let's us hanging around with our friend
and not turn into "man hunt game" like Day Z and another zombies game
      another question
what about PC spec requirement to run this game?
you have talking about "Modern current gen graphics" and that make me kinda concern about that

      Delete
    5. Yes he did say current gen graphics but he also said he is going to make it playable for lower end PC's as well, So my guess is that there will be settings just like the current game to adjust the graphics.

      Delete
    6. @Russel If you read the entire post Neil put up, he explains why our current DF1 Items and level's can not transfer, just don't buy anything else besides GM until the new game comes out, I was thinking about buying a UWC until i saw this new game coming out, so easy thing is to just wait for the new game bud.

      Delete
    7. @velvetRoseDF yeah i know that but its totally unfair its a waste of money now if there's something we can turn that uwc and that 10k armor and 2 ghost ammo turn to credits again on new game for same amount that we spend on DF because its alot dude i spend almost 3000 dollars here to support DF since the beginning

  63. I have to say no matter how the game turns out. I believe in the people who still play the game for the lore for the pure enjoyment of the time they took to grind through the horrors of the inner city from natashyas holdout to the bunker or wastelands. As a community i believe its not always the work of the game but the community and the producer as a whole that'll make the game great because we gave our input when it was needed and the person up top decided to listen to that input and making it a reality that in its own right is damn well good enough for me anytime to come back to admin pwns work. i remember being 13 looking up free zombie games on my laptop to find this dead frontier online mmo after playing the previous ones and i fell in love even if i lost my first account to lack of play i had an urge to return because it brings me this sense of connection with the people who still play to this day like an honor to see it from a year after it was made to the end of its life to be a catalyst for something new for something better something made from ideals of the community and creator. that's what made dead frontier the seller of a game it is today for me at the very least. Thank you Admin Pwn for the frustrating blood dogs and flaming titans and spiders alike they made zombie games feel less bland and game the genre to me some hope. hope to see DF2s start and End. \(^-^)/

    ReplyDelete
  64. So is the game going to have the play style of a DayZ type game, but with the kind of Dead Frontier story/gamestyle? Also, I don't like the fact that you put dead frontier in as too much of a grind. Every game should have a grind. I hope you are creating a game that will never have an "end game." Also, I hope you are making it so you will lose your gear upon death. This will fix the economy and make the game much harder, better, and attractive to players as having a rare item will be even more rare. Just some of my input, I'm sure you have almost everything figured out, but I have so many ideas floating in my mind. I am hyped for this my man

P.S OP think your idea(s) are great, a grinding game is always the funnest IMHO.

I've would liked to read ore about some kinda ''compensation'' for our old inversion, before 2017, but sadly not. Honestly, I hope DF2 be our BIG COMPENSATION; I mean, I got a great illusion about that.

  81. I have to admit, I literally did come back to Dead Frontier only to check out any new updates. Hoping to also play a bit for a nostalgic feeling. Also checking the wiki for a more informative update. All of which this is not something-- rather, I was hoping Dead Frontier would turn to First Person perspective.

Although that wasn't the case, the fact remains that Dead Frontier introduces an all new perspective.

"Forget that, a sequel to the original game is being introduced!" - I thought

I was literally taken by storm when I read the announcement. Heck, I even hit the refresh button in the wiki to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, and I wasn't. I'm really glad that Dead Frontier is about to introduce new content, but overall still remain as the Dead Frontier we all know (I also got extremely hyped, getting all excited about the plans for Dead Frontier).

Regardless, looking forward to the new game coming soon man, keep up the good work! It's been 5 or 6 years since I registered into Dead Frontier and i'm really surprised a sequel is being introduced. So, yeah keep it up man, and stay classy! :)

  92. Admin you've probably already answered so many questions about this, but I'm simply curious as to why you're shifting away from the open-world setting into more tight locations. You have mentioned that it's more to make it a survival horror than anything, but isn't there another way to go about doing so?

Back when I played 2D, there was always a feeling of survival horror to the game despite the world being open-ended. There was always a feeling of dread that zombies could pour out from just out of the darkness bordering your screen. Unlike DF3D where everything is decently lit up, 2D presented itself as more of a dark and gloomy world (despite being top down) with suspense at every corner.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there is a charm about having DF being an open world game that other zombie mmos or games do not. If you're able to replicate that same feeling of dread from 2D while still keeping the open world format, that formula might still work. I do agree that walking around in DF is a pain however, so it shouldn't be too open-ended while still retaining the aspect of exploration.

Either way, however you go about doing it, I'd still look forward to the release of DF2 nonetheless, as a faithful player since 2D.
